The first annual Palmer Lake Outdoor Classic is set to unfold on Jan. 4, and the D38 players and coaches behind the event are generating some buzz.
Rhys Halaby, senior at Palmer Ridge High School, and Scott Bradley, head coach for Ice Hockey at Lewis-Palmer High School, appeared together on the morning edition of Fox21 to tout the fundraiser and hockey game.
“The first-annual outdoor Palmer Lake Classic event in Palmer Lake, on Palmer Lake. It’s a hockey game between LPHS and Cheyenne Mountain,” Bradley said. “We’re super excited to have the local community coming out to the lake to watch an outdoor hockey game under the lights.”
The game is a CHSAA foundation game, meaning it will not count in terms of official standings, but it does mean ticket fees will go to support the self-funded D38 hockey team.
“We’ve basically had to craft the ice, build it up, but it’s been a lot of work,” Halaby said. “It’s just such a classic thing to play hockey outside. It’s going to be an awesome community event and I know I’ll remember it for a long time.
A host of individuals from across the district assisted in building up the ice, and when the puck drops at 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday night, an entire community of D38 supporters will enjoy the fruits of that labor.
