In a departure from standard Board of Education director comments, Treasurer Ron Schwarz helped steer the board’s December meeting into an unconventional, yet thankful, start.

“We talk a lot about what’s going on with schools, but we don’t spend a lot of time on the ‘Why’ behind why we’re here,” Schwarz said. “I just thought it would be interesting to ask my teammates why you’re here, why you spend the nights and weekends.”

The answers that followed kicked off a tone of appreciation and caring.

“My heart has been called to service in the most important part of our society, which is education,” said Tiffiney Upchurch. “I do that in the hopes that I can help make a difference in even one child’s life by instilling an environment where we actively work to reach and teach each child, support quality teachers and advocating for quality relationships with our stakeholders.”

Vice President Theresa Phillips and Matthew Clawson echoed the desire to serve students and the community.

“It’s all about the kids. Everything we do is in the best interest of our kids,” Clawson said.

“Ultimately, I care. I care about this community and I care about these kids and I care about our school system,” Phillips added.

Superintendent KC Somers, Ed.D., offered the quote, “To whom much is given, much is required.”

Somers said he was given a lot by those who invested in him as a student, and giving back, in the same way, is rewarding.

“The challenges presented are significant and so are the opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of all of our kids, but also all of our adults,” Somers said.

Schwarz, when asked to answer the question he initially proposed, said he comes from a family of immigrants who have made the U.S. their home.

“I know the next generation of Americans hold our future in their hands. If I can do something to have an impact on six or seven thousand kids, I think they will have an impact on 60 or 70,000, and so on and so forth,” Schwarz said.

Multiple comments shared throughout the meeting also shared thanks to D38 teachers, families and beyond as the fall semester ends with many families celebrating the holiday season.
