Lewis-Palmer School District 38 is proud to serve a diverse population of learners representing over 40 different languages ranging from Spanish to Tigrinya. These students have languages other than English in their home or background and are in the process of developing and refining their academic English proficiency for success in school.
Every school site offers standards-based English Language Development with trained, qualified EL instructional staff as a part of the regular school day. Students develop their academic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English while being supported with the core content curriculum.
When reading or learning about English Language Learners, there are many different acronyms used. English Language Learner (ELL) was changed to English Learner (EL), but you will still see both in use. Even now it's ever -changing as many use the term Multi-Lingual Learner because we know that some of our students speak more than two languages. Our department focuses on Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE), so that is an acronym you will often see, too. At LPSD, we value the diversity that our EL students bring to our classrooms and schools. We encourage development of home languages alongside the acquisition of the English language. If you have any questions or would like more information, please reach out to Katie Scott, MS Coordinator for Lewis-Palmer School District.
