Supported by more than 30 volunteers, the D38 Chess Team hosted its 16th annual free chess tournament on Feb. 11, drawing the largest-ever participation in the program’s history.
With more than 115 students participating in the event, Tournament Director Steve Waldmann said the tournament moved to Bear Creek Elementary School to accommodate all students and volunteers.
“I am just so appreciative of D38 hosting us every year, and the support that we get from the district. Without all the assistance, it wouldn’t be nearly as good, and I really thank you,” Waldmann said.
Students from kindergarten through grade 12 participated, and the tournament was open to any student attending D38 or residing within the district’s boundaries. Winners received a trophy commemorating their masterful moves.
Several winning students appeared in person at the Feb. 21 Board of Education meeting to be honored publicly for their chess prowess.
